Strategies to be a better poker player

Poker is a game that implies, on one hand a bit of luck and on the other, a lot of strategy. To play good poker and master its secrets requires time and patience, more than any other discipline. Reading books on poker, sharing anecdotes with other poker players, hiring a poker teacher or registering in a school of poker, are a few ways to better our playing level.

One way to better our poker strategy, surely the cheapest, is to share anecdotes and experiences with other poker texas holdemfans. If we have an internet connection, we have access to other opinions and stories of online forum members. This will give our poker game a greater perspective.

Books on poker are also an excellent way, and relatively cheap one, to better our game. Little does it matter if we play at multi-table poker tournaments or only at one table ones, or play for money, there is a book that will suit our needs. The good thing about books is that we can read over and over the chapter that is most interesting to us.

In the past years, the sites that offer poker lessons have grown. These sites give poker players the chance to observe good professionals discussing and explaining poker strategies while they play at poker tables.

We can also hire a private poker professor, but this turns out to be the most expensive way of bettering our game. To obtain a professional trainer takes poker to another level and gives the possibility of getting in-depth poker knowledge, analysis of poker salons and the development of strategies.

Michael Tureniec is the winner of EPT Copenhagen

Michael Tureniec claimed the title at the European Poker Tour Copenhagen this week. The Swede player, who ended in second place in the EPT London in 2008, received a prize of half a million Euros. Although 2010 was not a great year for the poker player, he seems to be in a good streak now.

The new winner of the EPT Copenhagen is Michael Tureniec from Sweden, with a prize of €496,271. He played the heads-up against Swede Per Linde and showed the poker skills that put him in second place in the 2008 EPT London. Per Linde, John Eames, Juha Helppi and Kevin Iacofano were also in the final table of this poker event.

This year, the EPT Copenhagen main event welcomed 449 poker players from different countries. Kirsty Thompson, who is an EPT spokesperson, commented on the success of the poker tournament and said that many Scandinavian players took part in it. “This made for a very exciting five days leading up to a world-class final table. Congratulations are due to all those who made the money, especially our winner Michael Tureniec.”

Tureniec commented that he was really happy and was glad he was able to win against such tough opponents. “It’s such a tough field here with a lot of Scandinavian poker player,” he added and said that now he plans to buy a car and get a driver’s license.

Peter Eastgate was another familiar face at the poker table. In 2008 he won the WSOP main event and last year he retired from the poker circuit. The next event in the European Poker Tour is the EPT Snowfest event in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria.

Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth leave UB

The news was first announced by UB through its blog and the poker players also commented on it via Twitter. “I’ve sincerely enjoyed wearing the UB patch, but it’s time for me to move on,” Duke wrote. “So why am I leaving UB? In a nutshell, professional and personal growth. I’m going to explore and pursue other business opportunities on a full-time basis.”

Phil Hellmuth also had something to say about it and posted on Twitter: “Making a BIG move … leaving UB. Truly lots of great memories, but it’s time to move on … Mutual decision … Looking forward to BRIGHT future!” In an interview the player commented that it was just a business decision and had nothing to do with UB management.

Although the poker stars have not confirmed rumors about their future and possible endorsements, Hellmuth is expected to endorse his own site or the WSOP.com site, where he as at the top of the bracelet ranking. There are few chances of Hellmuth joining other sites to be just part of a team since he has a strong personality.

On the other hand, Annie Duke had a great 2010 winning the National Heads-Up Poker Championships and appearing in “Celebrity Apprentice”, which could give her access to a good endorsing contract. One possibility is following her brother’s steps and join the Full Tilt team.
